Motor Vehicles

The Gilpin County Clerk and Recorder’s office is responsible for vehicle registration, titling and issuing license plates.  You may pay for your license fees with personal checks, cash or credit cards. There is a notary on-site for your convenience (please check for availability).
Many DMV transactions can be completed on line at or at a kiosk at many supermarkets.

You can also renew by mail or by dropping your check/money order (no cash) in the ballot box in front of the Old Courthouse. This avoids long wait times for an appointment and AVOIDS LATE FEES.

You will be able to see your time and date of your appointment as you schedule it. You will get a confirmation email as well as a reminder email before your appointment. 

  • Customers are limited to 2 transactions per appointment, no exceptions. Please call for an appointment for 3 or more transactions so that we can schedule an appointment when there is sufficient staff to assist you. 
  • We will open to walk-in customers as of June 1, 2021. Please note that customers with appointments will be given priority and seen first. Walk-in customers will be seen as time and staffing allows. We will call you when it is your turn and may ask you to return at another time. Walk in customers will still be limited to 2 transactions. Last customer will be seen at 4pm. 
  • MV appointments are to be scheduled online only, unless otherwise stated in the scheduling system. We are currently taking appointments through July 31.
  • We are closed daily from 12:30pm to 1:30pm for lunch. 
  • All individuals will be called by their confirmed appointment.
  • Appointments will be forfeited if you are more than 5 minutes late.
  • All individuals entering county property are required to wear a face mask.

Motor Vehicle Rules, effective March 1, 2016:

1.  To avoid any misunderstandings we will not quote fees or give estimates over the phone.

2.  Renewals can be done online at by mail, drop box, kiosk or in-person.

3.  If you did not receive your renewal card in the mail, please call 303-582-5321 and leave your name, number and plate # and we can call you with a total. It may take a few days to return your call. 

4.  Customers needing to have multiple transactions should call and make an appointment due to staffing constraints.

5.   Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4pm No titles will be processed after 4pm.

We may not perform any motor vehicle transaction for anyone except the owner of the vehicle, unless the customer has the owner’s power of attorney. The only exception is a registration renewal if the customer has the owner’s renewal postcard. Businesses must give a letter of authorization to their agent in order for us to handle their transactions.

These policies are dictated by the Drivers Privacy and Protection Act (DPPA) which we are required to follow. They apply even if the customer is a spouse, family member or friend.
